A Sustainable Battery Solution: Re:Act to ZERO Zone

        Re:Act to Zero Zone

The Re:Act to ZERO Zone was divided into two sections: battery recycling and plastic recycling. This space showcased LG Chem’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions through recycling and build a circular economy. In the battery recycling section, LG Chem highlighted their expertise in battery materials and their commitment to establishing a sustainable circular economy through differentiated technologies. By recycling used batteries, LG Chem is developing eco-friendly battery materials, which are expected to help reduce the cost of EV batteries and support the broader adoption of electric vehicles.

On the other side, the plastic recycling section showcased LG Chem’s mechanical recycling technology. This process involves collecting waste plastics, which are then shredded, washed, and separated before undergoing LG Chem’s proprietary processing to be transformed into PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) materials. Additionally, an EV charger made from LG Chem’s LETZero materials was on display, allowing visitors to see a real-life application of sustainable materials firsthand.

The Re:Act to ZERO Zone was more than just a technology exhibition—it was a space where visitors could see witness LG Chem’s efforts to protect the environment and achieve sustainability.

Safety Zone: Introducing Battery Safety Technologies

At the Safety Zone, visitors could explore LG Chem’s thermal runaway suppression technology and various solutions aimed at enhancing battery safety. Nexula™ (Aerogel Thermal Barrier) was particularly highlighted, with a detailed introduction to how it differs from existing thermal barrier materials and the mechanism behind fire prevention through battery thermal runaway suppression.

Visitors could watch a video on a large screen explaining how Nexula™ operates, accompanied by a model that helped them understand the structure of the actual product. Right next to this exhibition was the ‘Success Safety Solution’ experience corner, where visitors could take on a mission to complete a battery safety solution within a set time using a touchscreen. Those who successfully completed the mission received a small souvenir. By incorporating interactive elements beyond a simple product display, the exhibition made battery safety technology more engaging and enjoyable, leaving a strong impression.

Cathode Zone: Leading Next-Generation Battery Performance

        Cathode Material zone

The Cathode Zone showcased the structure of cathode, a key material that determines battery performance, along with LG Chem’s technological expertise. A model was displayed to provide a clear visual of the cathode’s structure at a glance, alongside a roadmap of LG Chem’s cathode products. This setup allowed visitors to easily grasp the latest trends in battery materials and the direction of ongoing research.

At this year’s exhibition, LG Chem introduced Korea’s first mass-produced new precursor process; LG’s Precursor Free (LPF), announcing the company’s full-scale entry into the market. Unlike traditional methods, this new technology enables direct sintering* of cathode materials from a customized metal source without the need for separately producing a precursor. This approach enhances low-temperature output performance and shortens precursor development time. Additionally, it reduces the investment costs required for precursor production while also minimizing wastewater and carbon emissions during the manufacturing process. Starting with mass production in the first half of this year, LG Chem plans to expand the application of this technology to future products.

Besides the advanced precursor process, LG Chem unveiled their ‘Ultra High Nickel (High-Ni) Cathode’, which contains over 96% nickel, along with high-voltage mid-nickel (Mid-Ni) cathodes, high-density lithium iron phosphate (LFP), and differentiated LFP products blended with NCM. In addition, the company introduced their manufacturing competitiveness driven by smart factory technology and next-generation battery materials featuring single-particle technology, attracting significant attention.

At the Separator Zone, LG Chem introduced their SRS separator technology. The SRS separator prevents direct contact between the cathode and anode, thereby reducing the risk of electrical short circuits and battery fires. While traditional separators are susceptible to heat, the SRS separator features a ceramic particle coating on its surface, enhancing its heat resistance.

Another key aspect of the exhibition was the anode binder technology, which mechanically stabilizes anode active materials to enhance battery lifespan and efficiency. LG Chem has developed an eco-friendly water-based latex anode binder, which ensures more stable adhesion of electrode materials, thereby improving battery performance and durability.

The Automotive Adhesive Zone showcased various heat management and adhesive solutions designed to enhance the performance and reliability of EV battery systems. Automotive adhesives securely fasten internal battery pack components while effectively dissipating heat, thereby improving battery safety.

At other exhibition spaces within the booth, LG Chem introduced materials for dry electrode technology and core technologies for next-generation solid-state battery cathodes. The dry electrode technology reduces energy consumption and solvent use compared to conventional wet processes, enabling more eco-friendly battery manufacturing. Meanwhile, solid-state batteries are gaining attention as a key technology poised to lead the future battery market.
